Family

VERDIANU Dumitru, Austria

2012 Ungheni Sculpture Camp, 5th edition. Sandstone

"Grigore Vieru" Square, National Street

The sculpture has a deeply human, warm and meditative meaning. Family is not an idyllic scene, but a confession about the bond that holds the world together. The four figures are tightly united, fused into a single volume of stone, suggesting that the family is not a sum of individuals, but a common body, shaped by time, sacrifice and memory.

The face of the adult in the back – the father – has harsh features, sculpted with an almost archaic force. His gaze is directed forward, beyond the present, as if he bears the responsibility of the road. He does not dominate, but supports. His body becomes a silent support for the others.

The child in the center, asleep or abandoned with trust in the arms of the family, is the emotional core of the composition. The head slightly tilted back, eyes closed, hands relaxed suggest complete security. This figure does not yet know what the weight of life means – and that is precisely why the entire mass of the sculpture seems to gather around it, like a shield. The other two figures look sideways, each in a different direction. One is oriented towards the past, the other towards the future. Together, they create a temporal arc: memory – present – hope.

The family thus becomes a point of balance between what was and what is to come. In the context of a square named after Grigore Vieru, the work acquires an additional resonance. It becomes a visual commentary on the idea of language, mother, nation and continuity, central themes also in Vieru's poetry.

Family is the place where one learns the first words, the first silences and the first loves. In essence, Family is a sculpture about how man becomes strong not alone, but together with others. It is a work that does not demand admiration from a distance, but proximity – almost instinctive – like a gesture of staying closer to loved ones.
