ZDERCIUC Ion, Chisinau, Republic of Moldova
The sculptor offers us a work with Dionysian energy, dedicated to the joy of living, pleasure and freedom of the senses. The character is represented stretched out, massive, with a rounded body and a relaxed presence, as if in a state of abandonment after the celebration. The face, with its wide gaze and calm expression, does not suggest violent excess, but a reconciliation with life and the moment.
The sculptural volume is built of ample, flowing forms that give the sensation of overflowing – like wine or the water of a nearby spring. The texture of the chisel, left visible on the surface of the sandstone, makes the skin seem alive, vibrating, and the light is refracted in small impulses, emphasizing the sensation of slow movement. The Bacchic presence thus becomes a symbol of vitality and regeneration: a force of nature that does not justify itself, but exists.
The location of “At the Spring of Bacchus” completes the meaning: the work does not stand as a solemn monument, but as a spirit of the place, docile, linked to water, coolness, tranquility, and encounter. Thus, the “Bacchus” proposed by Zderciuc is not only the god of wine, but also of communion – around him people gather together, and time becomes gentler.
