MACOVEI Victor, Chisinau, Republic of Moldova
The title Crooked Wood sounds like a popular expression and refers to the simple but energetic gesture of bending matter to give it a new shape. Interestingly, the artist talks about “wood”, but works in travertine, a stone that seems, by definition, rigid. This is where the idea of the work comes in: even what seems inflexible can be shaped through will and craft.
If we look closely, we see strong contrasts: cut, massive, almost raw volumes, and a broad, smooth curve that crosses and "embraces" the void in the center. This void is not accidental; it becomes the place where we best read the "bending", the tension, the effort of transformation. The work can be understood as a metaphor about adaptation: how we find a balance between rigidity and flexibility, without breaking, but without remaining unchanged either.
