The voluntary sacrifice of Ana to Manole, for the elevation of the sacred temple, is the subject that incited the sculptor's imagination. The symbolic rendering of the last embrace between the two emanates tenderness, elegance, beauty, affection, but also much sadness in the face of the final separation.

The sculptor chooses the most human moment: the last embrace. The title changes the emphasis: it is not just Ana, but an altar for Ana. That is, her body and destiny become the foundation of the sacred, just as, in the legend, sacrifice becomes the essential condition for the erection of the edifice.

So, Altar for Ana is a subject about love that accepts loss and about the sacredness built on sacrifice. It does not brutally glorify sacrifice, but shows it as a vulnerable beauty: an embrace that is, at the same time, both a blessing and a farewell.
