POPA Nicolae-Ovidiu, Bucharest, Romania
Sacrifice, Union, Salvation, a work produced within the 2018 edition, dedicated to the Centennial of the Great Union, anchors the theme of unity in a deeply Christian key. The title indicates very clearly the center of gravity: Sacrifice. The sacrifice of the Savior, crucified and nailed, as the supreme act for faith and for the restoration of communion. In this sense, “Union” does not appear only as an external bonding, but as a form of unity based on sacrifice.
Then, the sculptor makes an association with the history of the Romanian nation: the forefathers who sacrificed themselves so that unity could be achieved in 1918. Thus, the work reflects two planes: a spiritual one, of model and meaning, and a historical one, of concrete fulfillment through dedication.
The form, with the raw mass of stone and the sign of the cross suggested in the center of the composition, reinforces this idea: sacrifice is the axis, union is the fruit, and salvation can be understood as healing and wholeness - not only of the person, but also of the community, of the Romanian nation.
