Balance

VERDIANU Dumitru, Austria

2002 Ungheni Sculpture Camp, 2nd edition. Sandstone

Ungheni and Nisporeni Courthouse Square.

Balance is imposed through a solemn, almost archaic verticality, like a silent presence watching over the public space in the center of Ungheni. The massive, compact volume is organized in a clear tension between weight and stability, between strength and restraint.

The sculpture does not seek movement, but state – that moment of stillness in which opposites support each other. The form is reminiscent of two stylized human figures reduced to their essence: the head is suggested, not described, and the bodies support each other, in an inner gesture of self-control. The surfaces of the sculpture are worked rhythmically, with visible chisel marks and emphasize the idea of time.

Positioning it on a solid base amplifies the symbolism of the sculpture: balance is not fragile, but is born from weight, from assumption, from direct contact with matter and reality.

Equilibrium is a sculpture that asks the viewer to stop, be silent, and reflect. It speaks of measure, responsibility, and that inner stability without which neither man nor society can endure.
