An enigmatic character

Central Pharmacy Square, National Street

In 2017, when the first Catalog of the Ungheni Sculpture Camps was published (p. 80), we noted that Valentin Vârtosu's work proposes an eclectic and modernist style. The lines and shapes used give the sculpture a special expressiveness. The attached lateral element (the chair) is not just an aesthetic detail, but aims to give the work a clear functionality: a place of rest, peace, meditation and contemplation.

Unfortunately, in recent decades, the "boutique architecture" of the Ungheni city center has taken a toll on our sculptures, so that the work — like others of its kind — was relocated and, in the meantime, was also "deprived" of certain original elements.

Finally, "An Enigmatic Character" remains a metaphor for modern man who, although surrounded by mechanisms and rigid structures, remains essentially an entity linked to the earth and the mystery of creation. It is a work about balance, spiritual mechanics and tranquility, defining Valentin Vârtosu's artistic philosophy of bringing art into public space in the form of a silent dialogue partner.
