VIERU Gheorghe, Ungheni
It is a commemorative placed work that takes up a prototype from the years of World War II, preserved at the Ungheni Museum, discovered in 1992 in the crypt of the "Saint Nicholas" church in Ungheni, and recontextualizes it as a public symbol of collective memory.
Framed in a memorial, the cross is dedicated to all the people of Ungheni who suffered from wars, famine and deportations, the war in Transnistria in 1992, transforming the Christian sign of the cross into a landmark of pain and dignity. Inaugurated in 1993, in the context of the end of the conflict in Transnistria, the work still functions today as a place of reflection: flowers are laid here on commemoration days, marking the tragic episodes that the people of Ungheni went through in the last century.
