GUILHERME BRANCO DE CARLO, Portugalia
It is just one of the sculptures in Ungheni that evokes women. Like the others, it is formidable. We have already talked about some, and we will talk about others.
Today is March 8th – International Women's Day. In the case of this work, however, we are talking about the very essence of human existence: the woman-mother.
"A Mother for Everyone," created by the talented Portuguese sculptor Guilherme Branco de Carlo, is a sculpture of silent love.
The work is rounded, with the body drawn in on itself. We do not see an idealized motherhood, but one that is deeply protective. The ample volume becomes a refuge: the mother does not dominate, but encompasses, becoming a shelter.
The clasped hands suggest protection, not possessiveness. The expression on the face is calm, slightly smiling, without drama. It is an active, watchful gentleness. The mother does not promise or explain – she watches.
The sandstone is worked with a finesse that makes it seem almost soft. The paradox becomes essential: the hardness of the stone is transformed into tenderness. Maternal love thus appears as a force that resists time.
The title says it all: "for everyone". The figure does not belong to an ethnicity or an era. It is the archetype of the mother – the one who nourishes, watches over, endures, understands, forgives, stays and waits...
