MALINOV Malin, Bulgaria
The work was created as part of the 2018 symposium, dedicated to the centenary of the Great Union of 1918. The sculptor starts from a strongly symbolic image: the course of the Prut River, which after 1812 came to divide the Romanian nation. Therefore, the main form is conceived as a winding riverbed, flowing and meandering, with a movement that suggests both continuity and separation.
Looking at the composition, we notice how the curved volume traces this idea of a sinuous course, and the concave spaces can be read as a riverbed, as a place of passage and historical memory. In the upper part, the three globules are a key sign: they symbolize the unity of the three Romanian countries, placed above the “river” as an aspiration and a reaffirmation of the whole.
Overall, the work speaks of a historical wound – separation – but also of an ideal: unity, placed as a benchmark above the flow of time.
