"Sarmatian" culture. 4th century AD.

The Sarmatian necropolis from Medeleni.

Mug with handle, handmade, made of relatively fine paste, with little organic ingredients in the composition. The material of the creation is burnt clay, light brown in color, in places with gray spots, due to uneven firing. The container has an ovoid body, with the maximum diameter approximately at the middle of the height, the flared edge and the flat, slightly convex bottom. The handle of the vessel is approximately rectangular in section, with the upper end attached to the shoulder, and the lower one in the area of the maximum diameter.

The piece was discovered during archaeological research in 2015, in the Sarmatian necropolis in Medeleni, Ungheni, researched by a group of archaeologists from the National Archaeological Agency, director Vlad Vornic.

Discovered at the head of a buried deceased, it proves that the vessel belongs to the category of ritual pottery, in this case "funeral".
