"Equal opportunities and non-discrimination - Historical perspective in the Middle Prut Valley area".

January 29, 2026

The Braunstein Palace in Iași hosted today the conference "Equal Opportunities and Non-Discrimination - Historical Perspective in the Middle Prut Valley". The event was organized within the project "Gates for the Sustainable Integration of the Culture of the Middle Prut Valley in European Tourist Routes" (code ROMD00219), funded by the Interreg NEXT Romania - Republic of Moldova Program.

The conference brought together representatives of public administration from Iași and Ungheni, legal experts and cultural managers to analyze how common heritage can become a vector of social inclusion.

Accessibility challenges in museum institutions

A particularly important point of the debates was marked by the intervention of Mr. Vasile Iucal, Director of the Museum of History and Ethnography in Ungheni. He drew attention to a real barrier to equal opportunities: the lack of adequate access for people with disabilities in museums.

"We must be honest and admit that, currently, people with disabilities do not benefit from real and complete access to the Ungheni Museum. This situation represents a barrier to education and culture, which our project aims to address. A sustainable European tourist route cannot exist without ensuring the necessary infrastructure for absolutely all citizens to feel welcome and respected." – Vasile Iucal, Director of the Ungheni Museum of History and Ethnography.

Culture as a space of inclusion

The debates highlighted the role of cultural institutions as democratic spaces, where the ethnic and social diversity of the Middle Prut area must be transformed from a challenge into a cultural advantage.

The main conclusions of the conference:

• Social responsibility: Museums must mediate dialogue between communities and ensure universal access to heritage resources, without any form of discrimination.

• Integration through culture: Using heritage as a tool to combat educational barriers and integrate minorities and vulnerable communities.

• European standards: New cross-border tourist routes must be accessible and inclusive, reflecting European values of equity and belonging.

Partnership for Equity

The success of the project is based on the close collaboration between the teams from Iași Municipality and Ungheni Municipality. By courageously addressing accessibility issues and celebrating equality, the Middle Prut Valley is consolidating its position on the international cultural and tourist map.
