Gateways for Sustainable Integration of Middle Prut Valley Culture into European Tourist Routes

On June 12, 2026, at the International Center for Contemporary Art (former Turkish Bath) in Iași, the interim conference of the cross-border project "Gateways for Sustainable Integration of Middle Prut Valley Culture into European Tourist Routes” (ROMD00219), funded by the Interreg NEXT Romania-Republic of Moldova Programme. The project is implemented by the Ungheni Municipality, in partnership with the Iași Municipality, and has as its main objective the conservation, rehabilitation and valorisation of cultural heritage by integrating it into European tourist circuits.

 

The project aims to protect and promote the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Middle Prut Valley area, through the renovation and modernization of two urban museums. It also provides for the development of a common strategy for the tourist exploitation of cultural heritage and the organization of activities and events dedicated to both museum and cultural specialists and the general public.

 

The event was attended by representatives of local public authorities from the Republic of Moldova, the Ungheni Municipality and the Iași Municipality, the Iași County Prefect Institution, as well as specialists and experts in the field of culture and heritage. Also present were representatives of the Ungheni Museum of History and Ethnography, the Ungheni Palace of Culture, the "Queen Maria" Municipal Museum in Iași, as well as media representatives.

 

The conference presented the activities carried out in the first half of the project implementation period, carried out both in Iași, at the "Regina Maria" Municipal Museum and the Braunstein Palace, and in Ungheni Municipality, at the Palace of Culture. The participants were informed about the results obtained so far, materialized through the organization of exhibitions, workshops, conferences and round tables, as well as about the stage of project implementation and the stages taken to finalize the procurement procedures for the equipment and modernization of the "Regina Maria" Municipal Museum of Iași, as well as for the rehabilitation of the Palace of Culture in Ungheni.

 

The total value of the project is 1,665,183.08 euros, of which 1,319,246.39 euros go to the Ungheni City Hall, and 345,936.69 euros to the Iași City Hall. The implementation period is between June 2025 and June 2027.
